Franklin Cogswell
Franklin Cogswell, from Pine Valley, Chemung County, taught for 3 years before entering the
Albany Normal School. He graduated in January 1862, and entered the Normal School Company
as a private. He spent time in the hospitals, and was transferred to the Invalid Corps. He was
discharged from that duty to become a hospital steward. In 1864, with his health recovered, he
passed the examination and became a captain in the 127th U. S. C. T. He was mustered out in
Philadelphia in 1865, and moved to Mississippi, where he experimented in cotton planting. He
later moved to Sacremento, California, where he taught for 3 years. He became a member of the
Sacremento Board of Education, and later moved to Ponoma, California, where he raised fruit
trees. He married Flora Vultee, and had 2 children that were living as of 1895. (1)
