He enrolled in the army for three years and joined the Normal School Company August 30, 1862. He was captured on the march to Chancellorsville May 1, 1863, but was quickly paroled and returned to the regiment. He was wounded in the battle of Weldon Railroad August 16, 1864, but returned to duty and was transfered to the 140th NY when the 44th NY was mustered out in October 1864. He served through the rest of the war with the 140th, and was mustered out with that regiment June 3, 1865.
He returned to Otisco and to farming, and married his second wife, Elizabeth Case. He had three children with his second wife, John B. Miller, a farmer in La Fayette; Mary May, who married George C. King of Otisco, and Carrie M. Miller, a teacher.
