Erastus Miller

Erastus Miller was born in the town of Otselic, January 26, 1826. He was the son of Eber and Clarissa (Peace) Miller. Eber Miller, a farmer, came to Otisco in 1841, where he lived until his death in 1874, at the age of 70. Erastus Miller began working as a farmer at the age of seventeen, and married Elmira Clark, who died in 1865.

He enrolled in the army for three years and joined the Normal School Company August 30, 1862. He was captured on the march to Chancellorsville May 1, 1863, but was quickly paroled and returned to the regiment. He was wounded in the battle of Weldon Railroad August 16, 1864, but returned to duty and was transfered to the 140th NY when the 44th NY was mustered out in October 1864. He served through the rest of the war with the 140th, and was mustered out with that regiment June 3, 1865.

He returned to Otisco and to farming, and married his second wife, Elizabeth Case. He had three children with his second wife, John B. Miller, a farmer in La Fayette; Mary May, who married George C. King of Otisco, and Carrie M. Miller, a teacher.
