John Ostrom

John Ostrom, 1860 Normal School graduate, from Jehiel S. Raynor Autograph Book, 31st Class, 32nd Term, July 12, 1860, University at Albany Libraries, Archives of Public Affairs and Policy, Autograph Book Collection

John H. Ostrom, of Moscow, Livingston County, graduated from the Normal School in 1860 and moved to Clinton, Louisiana to teach. He only taught one year before he was driven north because of the war. He enlisted in the Normal School Company, but became sick and never went south with them. He joined the 175th N.Y. regiment after he recovered, and was commissioned a second lieutenant, but did not last long with that regiment either, due to illness. He married Elizabeth Neemes, also an 1860 graduate. After the war, he entered the gold beating business, and died before 1885. (1)
