The 10th U.S.C.T. organized in Virginia on November 18, 1863. Oliver Sturdevant joined the regiment that day as captain. The regiment was attached to Drummondstown, Va., Department of Virginia and North Carolina, from December, 1863, to April, 1864. First Brigade, Hincks' Colored Division, Eighteenth Corps, Army James, Department of Virginia and North Carolina, to June, 1864. First Brigade, Third Division, Eighteenth Corps, to July, 1864. Unattached, Eighteenth Corps, to August, 1864. Third Brigade, Third Division, Eighteenth Corps, to December, 1864. While the regiment changed organizations frequently, it remained on Provost Guard at City Point from June, 1864 until March, 1865. Third Brigade, First Division, Twenty-fifth Corps, to January, 1865. Third Brigade, Third Division, Twenty-fifth Corps, January, 1865. It was attached to the First Division, Twenty-fifth Corps, from January to June, 1865, and moved to the front in March, 1865. The regiment entered Richmond the day after Lee's evacuation. It then joined the Department of Texas until May, 1866. Sturdevant resigned April 6, 1866, just over a month before the regiment was mustered out, on May 17, 1866.
A detachment served at Plymouth, N. C. from November 26, 1863, to April 20, 1864, and participated in the siege of Plymouth April 17-20, 1864, and its surrender April 20, 1864.
