
James Woodworth and the 116th U.S.C.T.
A second commission was received by Company E of the 44th NY in
August 1864, but, like Sidney Burroughs commission, it could not be accepted. James Woodworth, who died at Laurel Hill on May 8, 1864, received his
commission as a first lieutenant in the 116th U.S.C.T. It was forwarded to his widow
and to the New York State Adjutant General.
The 116th U.S.C.T. was organized at Camp Nelson, Ky. from June 6 to July 12, 1864.The regiment was attached to Military District of
Kentucky, Department of the Ohio, to September, 1864. Unattached, Tenth Corps, Army of the
James, to November, 1864. First Brigade, Third Division, Tenth Corps, to December, 1864. First
Brigade, Second Division, Twenty-fifth Corps, to April, 1865. Third Brigade, Second Division,
Twenty-fifth Corps and Department of Texas, to September, 1866. Department of the Gulf to
January, 1867.

- Defense of Camp Nelson and Hickman's Bridge against Forest's attack.
- Ordered to join Army of the James in Virginia, reporting to General Butler, September 27.
