Rudolphus Gilbert Warner
Rudolphus Gilbert Warner attended the Normal School during the 1860-61 school year, but never
graduated. But he was still one of Kimball and Husted's favorite students, and received their
recruitment circular any way. He was mustered into the Normal School Company as Commissary
Sergeant. After Fredericksburg, he was taken ill with typhoid fever, and was absent from the
regiment from January until April. Although he was in the hospital, he still received a promotion
to second lieutenant on January 28, 1863. He returned to participate in the battles of
Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. His illness continued, however, and he was honorably
discharged on August 31, 1863. (1)
After the war, Warner moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and entered the Dental College in that city. After college he relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where he remained for the rest of his life. He was elected to the Columbus city council from 1881-1883, 1903, and 1905, and was active in the Republican Party, including the "famous" Columbus Republican Glee Club, of which he was president. He was also appointed a court bailiff for Judge Thomas M. Bigger, and was involved in military societies, as a member of J. M. Wells Post 451 of the Grand Army of the Republic, as an Aide-de-camp at the Buffalo and Chicago G. A. R. National Encampments, and as a companion of the Ohio Commandery, Loyal Legion. Warner married Miss Mary Emminger, of Mansfield, Ohio, in 1866. (2)
